I recently read:

The past exists only in our memory.
The future exists only in our plans.

Those two lines have been rattling around my head for a week.  That would suggest to me that reality exists only now.  However now only exists for a fleeting point in time and immediately becomes the past and influences the the future.  Is it possible there is no now and therefore no reality?

I have a feeling there is some profound epiphany here, but I just can’t grasp it.

Earthquake Sunday, February 07, 2010

Years ago an earthquake occurred in NB which was felt in PEI.  I was sitting in my third floor office when the building shifted just enough to be felt and I watched the thermo pane window crack from corner to corner.

Of course we are all aware of earthquakes causing havoc in various places around the world and today, Australian news is reporting another ‘quake off the coast of Japan.

When the ‘quake was felt here one of my older Island friends told me a fault line passes though the Charlottetown area.  In fact, he said the fault passes directly under the old A. Pickard building which is on the corner of University Ave. and Belvedere Ave.  He described uncovering a large open fault when the building was built and regardless of how much rubble and fill they dumped into it, they could not fill it up.  He indicated that the final solution was to place long steel girders over the fault which was sufficient to bridge the opening and allow the building to be constructed.

Does anyone know if this is true?

US Tea Party Sunday, February 07, 2010

Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has spoken at the first US Tea Party convention, urging a return to conservative principles.

From the BBC

Watch this party.  I predict they will grow to a point where they will be an influence in US politics.

I know that I should not have a favourite but Trek is hard to resist.  His unreserved demonstrative love for his people always leaves me laughing.  At the same time, he is a big goof.  This morning Herself left to do the Saturday shopping and I figured I would vacuum a week of dog hair.  As I approached Trek who was stretched out on his favourite piece of carpet I suggested to him that he move.  He tilted his head to one side, yawned and lifted one leg so that I might suck the hair from that one spot.  It was clear he preferred that I wait for a time to finish that was more convenient to him .  (Yes, I waited.)

As the PNP scandal fades from front-of-mind status (at least until April), I know many thoughtful people who are sincerely concerned about the liability that has been created when the greedy rushed to the trough occurred and which allowed certain happy recipients to get their fair share of the financial goodies.  For those of you who may have forgotten, the PNP scandal was a scheme which allowed wealthy immigrants to buy a Canadian passport – for a sufficient sum of money they would be ‘fast tracked’ through the immigration process – allowing them to buy a Canadian passport within 18 months.  The program was managed by the Province and the very large sums of money was used to invest in eligible businesses.  Many allege that corruption and cronyism ran rampant and only the political friends of the government of the day enjoyed the largess of the scheme.

Interestingly, I am personally aware of situations where, when well managed, the program was a positive influence in our little world.  (As to the seemliness of selling our passports – that is another question.)  Where things seem to have gone astray is when the government approved investments which (allegedly) were in violation of the guidelines and rushed to take advantage of a program when they were specifically told by the Federal overlords not to do so.  The rightness or wrongness of the morals of such a scheme or the alleged corruption and cronyism accusations are best answered by others.

…and so questions pertaining to the remaining liability to the Province (you and I) have been asked.  The question was raised as to if it is the $450,000,000 (that is million).  The response was “that is just the tip of the iceberg”.  Furthermore, it is not just Asian immigrants who are demanding their money back (which I had assumed), it is also wealthy Americans, Europeans and Syrians.  I am told that legal jousting has already commenced and that no provision is being made for this potentially disastrous and financially destructive liability.

Our tiny and insignificant little world is already bankrupt.  Will be become more broke?  Can one become more broke? Will we return to the good old days when a few feudal families ran the province to their advantage, leaving the rest of the population to struggle or leave.  Will our tourism attraction become a place for people to come because they can’t afford to go somewhere else nice?

Does anyone really care?

I suppose with the crash and burn of St. Barack and the inevitable financial ruin of the US it is easy to just assume we are screwed anyway.  Relax – be happy!  …or should we be concerned?

I am in need of a new Winter coat and as the Spring fashions are now arriving it seemed like a good time to look around.  I found one I quite liked.  Regular price was $199 and it had been marked down to $149.  If fit fine and would serve just fine.  There was another one I liked, so I kept going back and forth between the two.  As I was trying on the $149 coat again a clerk approached and asked if I liked the one I was trying.  I confirmed I did and she immediately put a new price sticker on it for $99.

With that kind of good fortune I am off to buy a lottery ticket and keep visiting here.
