Google’s new Gmail voice-calling feature logged more than 1 million calls in the first 24 hours, the search engine giant announced Thursday.

WOW.  More than one million calls that did not use Skype or did not use the telcohead service.

Google has confirmed that it plans to allow American and Canadian users to make free phone calls directly from their Gmail accounts this year, going directly into competition with Skype and other more traditional phone operators.

Voice is very easy to set up – few options and my first few calls have been equal in quality to a corded phone.  They do seem to be rolling out in Canada very slowly and the service is not yet enabled on my normal account.  There is a work around.  Hint – make a US proxy server your friend.
